Structure of the Bachelor's Study

Study program structure

The chemistry degree program is divided into a Bachelor's and a Master's degree program. The Bachelor's degree generally lasts 3 years and comprises 180 ECTS credits. It is divided into a 2-year bais study  and a 1-year advanced study. The basic study provides a theoretical and practical elementary education in chemistry and solid knowledge in the subjects of mathematics, physics, biology and biochemistry. Most lectures are supplemented with practicals and exercises.

From the second year onwards, you can choose either the mono study program in Chemistry with 180 ECTS or a combination of the Chemistry major study program and with a minor study program. The number of ECTS credits to be acquired does not change.  The following three options are available:

Structure of the Bachelor's degree | Mono Study Program 180 ECTS

The first two years of the degree course are identical for the chemistry and biochemistry study program.

The two-year basic study program serves to compensate for the different prior knowledge of graduates with different types of baccalaureate and to bring chemistry and biochemistry students up to the level of knowledge required for the advanced study program. It consists of elementary courses in chemistry, mathematics, physics, biochemistry and biology and an introduction to subject-specific computer science. Basic training in safety and environmental protection is also provided as part of the basic practical course.

In the third year of study, in addition to the compulsory subjects, there is a range of compulsory electives (selected from a defined list) and electives (freely selectable modules).

The Bachelor's thesis lasts a maximum of 3 months. It includes a scientific research work and the preparation of a written report as well as an oral presentation of the work.

The Bachelor of Science (BSc) can be obtained at the earliest after three years and the completion of 180 ECTS credits.

Chemistry Major study program with 150 ECTS credits plus a minor study program with 30 ECTS credits

The first year of study is identical for all chemistry students. After the first year, you can choose to take chemistry as a major study program with 150 ECTS credits plus a minor study program of 30 ECTS credits. The timetables within the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences are coordinated in the best possible way. If a minor study program from another faculty is chosen, students must coordinate the timetable themselves.

In the 150/30 option, lectures in biochemistry and in-depth lectures in the three classic chemical disciplines (organic, inorganic and physical chemistry) are replaced by courses from the minor study program.

Chemistry Major study program with 120 ECTS credits plus a minor study program with 60 ECTS credits

The first year of study is identical for all chemistry students. After the first year, you can decide to take the chemistry major study program with 120 ECTS credits plus a minor study program of 60 ECTS credits. The timetables within the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences are coordinated in the best possible way. If a minor study program from another faculty is chosen, students must coordinate the timetable themselves.

In the 120/60 option, the lectures in biochemistry, in-depth lectures in the three classical chemical disciplines (organic, inorganic and physical chemistry) and the freely selectable modules are replaced by courses from the minor study program.

From the 3rd year onwards, there are numerous options for all variants (BSc 180, BSc 150, BSc 120). Depending on your interests, you can specialize in different areas of chemistry. The Bachelor's thesis is the first independent research project carried out under the supervision of a research group leader. The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry can be obtained after three years at the earliest.

The Master's program following the Bachelor's degree usually lasts 1.5 years and comprises 90 ECTS credits. The Master's program is usually followed by a doctoral program lasting 3-4 years. The Master's degree course leading to a teaching diploma for baccalaureate schools lasts one year and comprises 60 ECTS credits.
