General Information

Crystallography is a highly interdisciplinary science combining chemistry, materials science, mineralogy and solid state physics. In particular, structural analysis using diffraction analysis is an excellent method for determining the three-dimensional structure of molecules. It is widely used in many areas of research and also for quality control in industry, e.g. in the pharmaceutical industry.

What will I learn in this minor study program?

The minor in Crystallography teaches the theoretical methodology and practical application of crystallography and demonstrates its importance for various scientific disciplines such as chemistry, biochemistry, solid state physics, molecular biology, pharmacy, earth sciences, medicine and materials science. Students acquire in-depth knowledge and skills in various crystallographic techniques. As part of the practical courses, you will have the opportunity to gain an insight into current crystallographic research and the various methods of growing single crystals.

Scope and requirements

The minor study program in Crystallography comprises 30 ECTS credits and can be completed as part of the Bachelor's or Master's degree program. In addition to the 4 compulsory lectures and the compulsory internship, there are a number of other courses to choose from depending on your interests. At least 12 ECTS must be obtained from the compulsory elective modules. In addition, elective modules worth at least 5 ECTS must be completed. These can be chosen from the compulsory elective modules or - after consultation with the student advisory service - from other areas, provided they are relevant to crystallography.

The Minor in Crystallography is offered jointly by UZH and ETHZ. The lectures of the Minor in Crystallography take place at UZH and ETHZ (lectures at ETHZ are easily bookable for UZH students, see link).

The minor program in Crystallography is open to all UZH students. Sufficient basic knowledge of natural sciences is required. Missing scientific basics (chemistry, mathematics) can partly be made up in the elective area after consultation with the study advisor.
