Prof. Gilles Gasser has just been awarded an ERC Consolidator Grant (2’000’000 €) for the project «Towards Novel Inert (Photo-)toxic Ru(II) Polypyridyl Complexes». In his project, Gilles intends to investigate the clinical potential of a different class of anticancer agents than those already on the market, namely inert Ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes. Gilles aims to focus his attention not only on an improved biological effectiveness under different clinically relevant conditions, but also on the reduction of side-effects compared to existing drugs. The results of this project may constitute the basis for a new generation of powerful and safe antitumor chemotherapeutics.
