Department of Chemistry

Since November 2025, the Department of Chemistry at UZH’s Irchel Campus has hosted the world’s most powerful nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, enabling researchers to study complex compounds and understand how they work in entirely new ways.

Congratulation to Nina Hartrampf on winning the Werner Prize 2026. The Werner Prize is awarded to promising young scientists working in Switzerland for outstanding research in the field of chemistry.

The University of Zurich was the first university in Europe to admit women and the first in the world to award a doctorate in chemistry to a woman, Lydia Sesemann from Viborg. The Swiss Academy of Sciences is now honoring the University of Zurich as an important historical site for chemistry with a Chemical Landmark.
